Why an adult changing table is the perfect addition to caregiving

There are many challenges that come with changing an older child or adult, for both the person and the caregiver—and when you don’t have access to the proper space with the right equipment, these challenges are multiplied. We view the use of an adult changing table as comparable to having the tools necessary for any task; in other words, it’s a simple means of improving an everyday routine, making it safer, more sanitary and more efficient for those involved.

Of course, we’re biased, but we think an adult changing table is the perfect addition to caregiving for people who need toileting assistance and therapy. Here are a few reasons why.

  1. It’s a safer way to change your patient or loved one.

If you’re changing an older child or adult on the floor or bed, you’re doing a lot of bending and lifting. Add wheelchair transfers into the mix, and both parties involved are at risk for serious injury. Since most adult changing tables are height-adjustable, they allow you to provide toileting assistance at the correct ergonomic height. They also help with wheelchair transfers, since they can be lowered to wheelchair level and raised for changing. Additional safety features are also available, such as guard rails and waist straps, which are especially helpful for patients who tend to move a lot.

  1. It’s more sanitary and allows for easier cleanup.

It’s no secret that toileting is messy. But having an adult changing table means any messes stay in one place—right on the table—and away from the floor and other furniture. The equipment itself is made with smooth materials and is easy to wipe clean. Often, changing tables are made with antimicrobial materials that may help prevent the spread of bacteria and infection.

  1. It makes toileting more dignified for everyone.

For most older children and adults, toileting is a private thing. So it’s no surprise that the changing process can already feel a bit awkward for both the caregiver and the person who needs assistance. Without a changing table, it can be a physically challenging and uncomfortable process for all parties involved, especially if changing takes place on the floor. This can also be embarrassing for the patient: even if they’re being cared for at home, it’s still not typical for an adult to lay on the floor. For these reasons, an adult changing table is more comfortable for the patient and adds a level of respect and dignity to the changing process.

  1. With a range of products available, it’s easy to find one that meets your needs.

When it comes to caregiving, there is no one-size-fits-all solution. We make it our goal to offer a variety of adult changing tables with different features, so you can choose one that best fits the needs of your patient(s), as well as the space in your home or facility.  For example, a wall-mounted fold-up changing table is useful for small spaces or rooms that are multi-purpose, since it can be folded up when it’s not in use. A mobile changing table is on wheels, so it’s helpful in hospitals and healthcare facilities, or any setting where it might need to be moved to different rooms.
